Fox, Shaw earn honorable mention

GIRLS BASKETBALL



Berkeley Springs players Danielle Fox and Heather Shaw both earned honorable mention on the West Virginia Class AA all-state team on Thursday.

Shaw averaged 12.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game this season, while Fox averaged 15.5 points and 4.2 assists.

PREP BASEBALL



Williamsport 2, Middletown 1


MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Ben Jordan pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while fanning five, as Williamsport edged Middletown in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

The Knights threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning with a runner in scoring position before Wildcats coach Rod Steiner decided to bring in staff ace Nick Adenhart, who forced a game-ending double play for the save.

Dustin Bachtell had an RBI single for the Wildcats (3-0, 3-0).

Randy Lawson led Middletown with two hits (0-2, 0-2).

South 7, Brunswick 4


Mike Campbell hit a two-run home run in the second inning to extend the Rebels' lead to five runs en route to victory.

Jeremy McAfee led South (1-1, 1-1) with three hits, while Josh Bussard added two.

Upper St. Clair 11, Hedgesville 0


MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Hedgesville committed nine errors, accounting for seven unearned runs in a loss to Upper St. Clair (Pa.) at the Hawaiian Tropic Classic.

The Eagles (0-4) allowed six unearned runs in the seven-run fourth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule.

Pitcher Josh Starliper allowed only three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings work. He also doubled for the Eagles.

Northern Garrett 16, Hancock 6


HANCOCK - Hancock committed five errors in a loss to Northern Garrett.

Jeremy Newton led the Panthers (0-2) with three hits - including two doubles - and four RBI.

Greencastle 5, Boiling Springs 3


BOILING SPRINGS, Pa. - Greencastle trailed by two runs through three innings before rallying to remain undefeated.

The Blue Devils (4-0) highlighted the comeback with a three-run, four-hit fifth inning.

Chris Scott pitched five innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs for the win. Nick Schreiber pitched the final two innings for his second save.

Catoctin 10, North Hagerstown 0


THURMONT, Md - Kelly Stiles led Catoctin (2-0) with two hits, three RBI and three steals, while Kelly Stiles had an RBI triple.

Brunswick 6, South 3


Winning pitcher Mandy Kaler struck out five and added two hits to lead Brunswick past South Hagerstown in the MVAL.

Lelleen Lewis added two hits for the Railroaders.

Christina Line, Jamie Fowler and Ashley Atkinson each had two hits for the Rebels (0-2).

Middletown 12, Williamsport 1


MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Emily Warrenfeltz threw a two-hitter and struck out three for Middletown (1-1).

Williamsport pitching allowed 11 walks, all of which scored.

Williamsport (0-2) scored its only run when Holly Bowers singled in the third, stole second and scored when the throw went into center field.

Berkeley Springs 5, Hancock 2


HANCOCK - Berkeley Springs scored three runs off of four hits during a two-out rally in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Hancock.

Jess Detrick drove in two of her three runs with a double in the final frame. Detrick finished with three hits and threw out five baserunners from behind the plate.

Winning pitcher Julie Scherps (4-0) homered for the Indians, while Amanda Willard, Amy Zahnow, Maggie Smith and Amanda Bowers each had two hits.

Heather Klinefelter and Ashley Creek each had two hits for Hancock (1-2).

Frederick 26, SJPH 0


FREDERICK, Md. - Noelle Jones tossed a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Frederick blanked St. John's at Prospect Hall.

Jones also had two hits, while Kate Glassmeyer had three hits and Amber Bakner added two.

Kendall Blumenthal drove in three for the Cadets (1-1).

Greencastle 6, Boiling Springs 1


BOILING SPRINGS, Pa. - Kris Root went 4-for-4 and Jessica Ritchey had two hits and an RBI to pace Greencastle-Antrim to a Mid-Penn Colonial win over Boiling Springs.

Serena Sheeder had an RBI single and Ritchey added a run-scoring double in the fourth inning when the Blue Devils (2-0, 1-0) took a 4-0 lead.

Jess Statler finished with seven strikeouts.

Northern Bedford 6, McConnellsburg 5


LOYSBURG, Pa. - Steph Imler stole home in the sixth inning, giving Northern Bedford the lead and an eventual victory over McConnellsburg.

Imler put Northern in position to win the game with a three-run double prior to her steal.

Steph Paylor and Darcy Everetts each hit two-run homers for the Spartans (1-1).

Carlisle 6, Waynesboro 5


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Chris Thorson hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give Carlisle a victory over Waynesboro.

Kelly Carpenter led the Indians (1-1) with three hits and three RBI, while Miley Stymiest and Jessie Miller each added two hits and Stymiest had two RBI.

BOYS LACROSSE



Smithsburg 17, FSK 14


SMITHSBURG - Mike Trueblood led Smithsburg with five goals and three assists.

Sean Hunt had four goals and three assists, while Dan Faulders had three goals and three assists for the Leopards (1-0).

Frederick 14, Catoctin 8


THURMONT, Md. - Steve Perrine scored six goals to lead Frederick.
