March 24, 2003

UNION BRIDGE, Md. - A man collecting aluminum cans with his wife and grandson Sunday afternoon along the road where he lived was struck and killed by a motorcyclist, Frederick County Sheriff's deputies said.

Marshall Lee Shaffer, 78, of 13020 Good Intent Road, was in the road near the intersection with Wachter Road at 12:04 p.m. Sunday when the motorcyclist, Charles Edward Harrelson, 39, of 7778 Hammer Court, Severn, Md., crested a hill to find Shaffer in the road, deputies said.

Harrelson was westbound on his Yamaha motorcycle when the collision occurred. Deputies said he lost control after the impact and was ejected. Wearing full leather gear and a full-faced helmet, Harrelson was taken to Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital for treatment.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, Harrelson was still in the emergency room being assessed, a nursing supervisor said.

Shaffer was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he died as a result of his injuries, deputies said.
