Luther Young

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Luther "Hoot" Young, 74, of 9470 Biesecker Gap Road, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at his home.

Born July 14, 1928, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Ben and Blanche Bonner Young.

He attended Waynesboro schools.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. Later, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1952 to 1956.

He was employed as a backhoe operator and laborer for Joe Bock Oil Co. and J. Bob Benchoff, both in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cletus Young and Lester Young.

Services and burial will be private.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, Waynesboro.

Margaret L. Penwell

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Margaret Lee Penwell, 73, of Charles Town, died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant, W.Va.


Born May 19, 1929, in Martinsburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Howard and Fortune Mavis Wood Penwell.

She was a Protestant.

She is survived by a brother, Nelson H. Penwell of Ranson, W.Va., two nieces and a nephew.

Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg. The Rev. Melanie McCarley will officiate.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town.

Hilda E. Schriver

NEEDMORE, Pa. - Hilda Evelyn Richards Schriver, 80, of Gem Bridge Road, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona, Pa.

Born Nov. 15, 1922, in Amaranth, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James and Goldie B. Plessinger Richards.

She was a 1940 graduate of Everett High School in Everett, Pa.

She retired from Chesapeake Welding in Baltimore as comptroller. She had been employed by Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Pa., and Blue Goose Orchards in Hancock. She also was a homemaker.

She was a member of Amaranth Church of the Brethren in Warfordsburg, Pa.

She was a member of Whips Cove Pals and Fulton County Historical Society.

She had been a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 15 of Hancock and a Girl Scout leader.

She is survived by two daughters, Lucille Creek of Newark, Del., and Linda Cashe of Franklinton, N.C.; three sons, Richard Schriver of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Clyde Schriver and Glenn Schriver, both of Warfordsburg, Pa.; a sister, Dorothy McCray of Chambersburg; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Schriver; a sister, Jean Reynolds; and a brother, Sheldon Richards.

A service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Amaranth Church of the Brethren, Warfordsburg. The Revs. Frank Teeters and Freeman Snair will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, Hancock and Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the church. The funeral home will open at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
