Mail Call for 3/21

March 24, 2003

Editor's note - The Daily Mail has asked readers to call in with their feelings about the U.S.-led war with Iraq. Some of those responses appear today on page B3.

More war-related calls will continue to appear in the paper over the next few days.

Readers are also urged to call Mail Call about other issues that concern them.

Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"About the pot holes. Wake up. The weather has to be warmer before anything can be done."

"I want to thank Dr. Morgan for coming to Hagerstown. Also, thanks to the Board of Education for putting students first and for all their long hours and hard work. Dr. Morgan has been a great addition to Washington County. Our school system seems to be heading in the right direction. With proper funding, we can better our schools each year."

"As a parent of two children in the military, and through talking to a few friends that also have relatives in the service, we are interested in starting a support group in the area for military families. We would like to welcome anyone who would be interested. The group would meet once or twice a month and exchange support for each other. My name is Lynn and my number is 301-432-4979, before 8 p.m."

"In response to the lady who wanted to know how to get water marks off of the furniture. Put mayonnaise on it, leave it on there for 24 hours, wipe it off and the water spots should be gone."

"Someone told me the other day that this is one of Hagerstown's best kept secrets. There are public transportation coach buses that leave from the motor vehicle administration office. They stop in Frederick, Park & Ride, The Shady Grove Metro Station and then go on to an area near Montgomery Mall. The parking in Hagerstown is free until the end of the month, the cost is $1 each way. This is really a great deal, but even better is the convenience of not having to drive in the traffic, being delivered to the Shady Grove Metro Station which can then take you any place you want to go in the Metropolitan, D.C. area. If you are a commuter, I think this is a great way to go."

"People need to support their country and fly their flags. God bless America."

"Boycott the Dixie Chicks, support America."

"I am deeply saddened by the recent car accident on South Potomac Street, but I am not surprised. It seems that the cruising through town issue has been addressed, but racing through town is still a favorite pastime in Hagerstown. On a daily basis, although more frequently in spring and summer months and on weekends, cars race down the street at horrific rates of speed. Sometimes they decide to turn off of Lee Street onto Potomac Street on two wheels and then continue racing down the street. About a year ago, a young man lost control on the turn and hit a parked car on Potomac Street. A woman had just removed her baby from the car seat! When I called the police, I was told to and I have tried to write down license numbers. I have children that play on the sidewalk and I am terrified that one of these irresponsible showoffs are going to hit my children or anybody for that matter! I am hoping that this Mail Call may bring this problem to the attention of those who are willing and able to look into it before somebody else gets hurt or killed.

"I am the one who had the dead cat in my yard. It was orange and white, but it has been taken care of now, it's gone."

"In response to the person who wanted to know how to get rid of water marks off of furniture. Take a little dish liquid, doesn't matter what brand, put it on a paper towel and rub it in. It works miracles on furniture."

"If you have a father and brother who were veterans and are now deceased, how do you go about getting a free headstone at Greenlawn Cemetery in Williamsport? They say that the families are responsible for the marble to inlay the bronze with the names and dates of the deceased. This has taken years and I still have no help and no headstones. Please leave a number to help our family."

"In regards to the person who left the message about the vinyl flooring in their kitchen, my boyfriend does that kind of work. You can call him at 240-675-9137, he will be glad to talk to you about it and give you any information you need."

"Toothpaste will take water spots off."
