Area roundup - Hawks fall 10-3 to Catonsville

COLLEGE SOFTBALL



WALDORF, Md. - Hagerstown Community College fell to 1-3 on the season with a 10-3 loss to Catonsville at the College of Southern Maryland Invitational on Sunday.

The Hawks went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning on Amanda McGhee's three-run homer, before Catonsville responded with 10 unanswered runs.

PREP TRACK



Area athletes compete at national meet


LANDOVER, Md. - Three area athletes competed over the weekend at the Nike Indoor Championships national track meet at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

Frederick senior Imani White placed seventh in the girls 60-meter dash in 7.64 seconds, while Frederick senior Ronnie Beard was eighth in the boys 60 hurdles in 8.08.

Chambersburg junior Kylee Schuler finished 11th in the girls two-mile run in 11:12.08.

Special guests included pro stars Carl Lewis and Alan Webb.

Mansfield 8-9, Shepherd 7-1


FRONT ROYAL, Va. - Mansfield University swept Shepherd in a doubleheader.

Bo Royal went 2-for-4 in game one for the Rams (4-5), while Shane Wines had a hit and two RBI and Josh Delawder scored a pair of runs.

Mansfield starter John Cronin tossed a complete-game four-hitter with eight strikeouts in game two.

Royal had an RBI double to plate Shepherd's lone run.

FRONT ROYAL, Va. - Tavis Laws went 4-for-5 with a solo homer and starter Brian Renner pitched seven solid innings to lead Shepherd past Mansfield on Saturday.

Renner (2-0) allowed one run while striking out four. Mike Spry, Charlie Drummond and Brad McCullough each had two hits for the Rams.

Rager paces FCC


FREDERICK, Md. - Waynesboro High grad Ethan Rager pitched five strong innings to lead Frederick Community College to a 5-1 win over Mohawk Valley Community College.

Rager allowed one run and three hits while striking out five.

Tony Showalter, a Greencastle-Antrim grad, had an RBI double for FCC (4-0).




PREP BASKETBALL



North all-stars sweep at JB


MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The North all-stars beat the South all-stars in both the girls and boys games at the 12th annual Franklin/Fulton County All-Star Classic Saturday night at James Buchanan High School.

Chambersburg's Levar Hage, the MVP and Slam Dunk contest champ, had 10 points for the North boys, who won 93-68. Waynesboro's Mike Sanders, the South's MVP, scored a game-high 19 points.

Shippensburg's Katey Reed scored a game-high 14 points for the North girls, who won 68-47. Reed was the North's MVP, while Southern Fulton's Jenny Liggett was the South MVP with her team-high 12 points.

Stuhler wins in Hagerstown opener


Gary Stuhler, of Greencastle, Pa., notched his 103rd career victory in the 30-lap ITSI late-model main event, as the Hagerstown Speedway put its first race of the season into the record books Sunday.

In the 30-lap big-block modified feature, Bret Hearn, of Sussex, N.J., led all the way for his 14th career win at Hagerstown.
