Deadline extended for Commission for Women's essay contest

The Washington County Commission for Women expected to honor the winners of its annual essay contest this month.

However, only five entries were submitted.

That's not enough, the commission decided, so the entry deadline was extended to April 2.

Catherine Cushwa Schoen, the commission's president, said she thinks this winter's heavy snow contributed to the sparse response. The snow canceled school for several days and may have kept a lot of students from hearing about the contest, she said.

The contest is open to Washington County students in grades eight through 12. Home-schooled students also are eligible.

The topic is "Women of Distinction." Writers are asked to pick a woman, current or past, and describe how she is a role model.

Essays must be 500 to 2,000 words, typed.

The entry should include the student's name, school, grade, teacher, principal, home address and phone number.

The commission will award $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.

Entries should be sent to Essay Contest, Washington County Commission for Women, County Administration Building, 100 W. Washington St., Room 226, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

The commission will contact the winners April 7 and give out the prizes April 9.
