Man avoids serious injuries when car hits garage

March 13, 2003|by MARLO BARNHART

An 89-year-old Hagerstown man escaped serious injury Wednesday evening when his car crashed through the back of his garage at 11824 Linbar Road and was left dangling several feet off the ground.

After he was freed from his vehicle, Charles Russell Hovermale was treated at Washington County Hospital and released, hospital officials said.

Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Crawford said he arrived at the Linbar Road home at 6:57 p.m. and saw a 1981 Buick hanging from the rear of the garage.

Fire and rescue crews from Smithsburg and Hagerstown stabilized the car so Hovermale could be safely removed from it, Crawford said.

The deputy said the driver told him he was pulling into his garage when he hit the accelerator instead of the brake.
