Mail Call for 3/12

March 13, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I understand the superintendent of schools lives in another county. That's OK, but why should Washington County supply her with a car and gas to drive back and forth? That should be her responsibility."

"Can someone tell me what a red arrow means at a single signal light? If you can't go on it, why is it an arrow? It should be just red, not an arrow."

"To the school board, I believe that substitute teachers should get extra pay since they have to work an extra half hour each day. Since they haven't had a raise in years, with the extra time added on, it's not fair to any substitute teacher."

"About the apron strings. You think you have problems. I have been married to a man for more than 13 years and he didn't let go of his mother's apron strings until she passed away. He was 37 years old then. So honey, if you love the ones you are with, hang in there, you are in for a bumpy ride."

"In all respect to the caller who reported that Supreme Court stopped Al Gore from stealing the election. Actually the Supreme Court stopped all the votes from being counted, so that the people's votes could not be heard. One person on the Supreme Court appointed Bush president as there was only one vote difference in the split on the vote on the Supreme Court. As reported in Business Week and the New York Times and others, there were 57,000 votes that Katherine Harris declared invalid during the election because the people were convicted felons and now it has been proven that only a few hundred of those 57,000 votes that weren't counted in Florida were convicted felons. Also, I want to point out that one and a half million more people in the United States voted for Al Gore than voted for George Bush."

"I am a parent at Bester School and I think that the traffic down there is horrendous. Someone needs to get down there and check it out before one of the kids get hurt."

"People continue to put chairs and other objects out in parking spots in front of their house. I just checked with police headquarters and they said that it is illegal to do this now. Any object that would blow out in the street and cause an accident that person could be held liable for damages."

"Did anyone take any pictures of our blizzard? I would like to have a copy of the negatives for my relatives out of town. Put a number in Mail Call and I will get back to you."

"Thank you Board of Education for extending the school day an extra half hour, creating an ongoing traffic problem at Bester Elementary to even worse. I would like to invite you guys down there to see the chaos you have created."

"Sen. Alex Mooney, a Republican, is trying to get Bill No. SJ2 passed, which honors former president Ronald Reagan and proposes a day for Marylanders to pay tribute to him. Don't we already have a holiday to honor former presidents? Isn't it called Presidents Day in February. Why do we need another for Ronald Reagan? Next thing he will want to have a Bush Day. This is ridiculous."

"A few years ago I used to make sourdough bread. I had a recipe for it and it was delicious. I was wondering if someone could put the recipe in for the starter. You have to have a starter to make this bread and I don't have the recipe for the starter. I would appreciate this."

"About the seniors who want the filling stations to pump their gas. If you people are able to walk to get in your car and able to drive it, I don't understand why you can't put the gas in yourself."

"Will someone tell me who is in charge of the next 1966 North Hagerstown High School Class reunion and when will it be? Please respond in Mail Call."

"I am calling to see what the 800 number is to call to get the meds from Canada."

"NASCAR is going to do something about Sterling Marlin. They are going to give him the 2003 Championship trophy. He is the best driver on the NASCAR circuit."

"Instead of expanding Maugans Avenue to five lanes, why don't they spend the money on improving Huyetts Crossroads? That is just a fatal accident waiting to occur. They need a left turn lane for each way."
