Hagerstown Suns officials want to extend the lease for Municipal Stadium by a year and possibly two, Hagerstown Mayor William M. Breichner said Tuesday night.

The current lease expires at the end of this year.

Breichner said representatives of the team and new owners Mandalay Sports Entertainment indicated they wanted a lease for 2003 and 2004 with an option for 2005.

Suns General Manager Kurt Landes confirmed the interest in two guaranteed years with an option for a third. Landes said team officials cannot pursue extending the lease until the sale of the team to Mandalay has received final approval.

Mandalay is still waiting for final approval from Minor League Baseball and Major League Baseball, Landes said.

Mandalay spokesman Kevin Mortesen of Wills Communications said he couldn't discuss specifics yet.

Mortesen said Mandalay officials hope to extend the lease shortly after sale of the team is approved.

"I think that we want to show our commitment and are looking for the city to do the same," Mortesen said.

The Suns are a Class A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
