Fairy L. Kirk

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Fairy L. Kirk, 86, of Buck Valley Road, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.

Born March 26, 1916, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Cromwell and Icy Crouse VanGosen.

Her husband, Robert "Bob" Kirk, died in 1979.

She was employed by Pittman's Grocery for 17 years, and retired in 1989 from the U.S. Postal Service in Warfordsburg.

She was a member of Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church, the choir and was a deacon and elder.

She was an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi, a volunteer listener for Bible Release Time and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She had been a member of Warfordsburg Grange, the War-Nee-Do Club and Lioness Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Alice Layton and Ruth Smith, both of Warfordsburg; one son, George Robert Kirk of Waynesboro, Pa.; one sister, Frances Cain of Hagerstown; a sister-in-law with whom she made her home, Evelyn Hendershot; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ethel Fox, Virgie MacCumbee, Julia VanGosen and Geraldine Huffman; eight brothers, Cramer VanGosen, Berkeley VanGosen, Carty VanGosen, Max VanGosen, Ned VanGosen, Donald VanGosen, Elmer VanGosen and Gilbert VanGosen; and one grandson.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John Barlow will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home in Hancock; and at the church Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral home will open Thursday at 2 p.m.
