W. Goode Gess

BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - W. Goode Gess, 87, of Bunker Hill, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born Jan. 6, 1916, in Hampshire County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John and Alma Miller Gess.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby McCauley Gess.

He was a graduate of Capon Bridge (W.Va.) High School.

He owned and operated Bunker Hill Market, retiring in 1985.

He was on the board of directors of Grocers Wholesale Inc., and was chairman of the board in the early 1980s.

He served in leadership positions in the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church and was a member of South Berkeley United Methodist Men.


He was a member and past president of the Inwood-Bunker Hill Lions Club; and past president of Berkeley County Democratic Executive Committee, Berkeley County Schools Service Personnel Association and Berkeley County Association of Retired Service Personnel.

He is survived by his wife, Helen McKee Davis Gess; one daughter, Susan G. Greenwalt of Bunker Hill; two sons, William G. Gess of Papillion, Neb., and James D. Gess of Bunker Hill; three stepdaughters, Donna McEldowney of Blacksburg, Va., Jerri Northcraft of Highview, W.Va., and Susan Rashid of Bettendorf, Iowa; three stepsons, Cornwell Davis Jr. of Yellow Spring, W.Va., Greg B. Davis of Wardensville, W.Va., and A. Kent Davis of Middletown, Va.; six grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Artie Smith and Dorcas Parker; and five brothers, Chauncey Gess, Julian Gess, Lyndon Gess, Frank Gess and Paul Gess.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at South Berkeley Chapel, Inwood, W.Va. The Revs. Robert Moales, Vicki Dotterer, Walter Bowers, John Gess and David Garns will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
