Mary E. Messner

QUINCY, Pa. - Mary Evelyn Ruth Messner, 95, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home and of 205 Park St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the nursing home.

Born Sept. 7, 1907, in Pen Mar, Md., she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Staub Ruth.

Her husband, John J. Messner, died Dec. 3, 1987. They were married Oct. 22, 1936.

She attended Smithsburg schools.

She was employed as a clerk for W.D. Grant Stores in Waynesboro, Florida and Chambersburg, Pa., until she retired Nov. 1, 1971.

She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Waynesboro, where she sang in the choir.

She was a member of National AARP and Euterpe Club.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary B. Keller of Baltimore, Margaret B. Warner of Waynesboro, and Joanne E. Zechmeister of Hopkinsville, Ky.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family.


She was preceded in death by two sisters, Bland Ruth and Anna Johnson; and one brother, Charles Ruth.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Waynesboro. The Rev. Stephen D. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, near Rouzerville, Pa.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, and one hour prior to the services at the church social hall.

There will be no public viewing at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 112 E. Second St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.
