March 10, 2003

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - A 16-year-old Halltown, W.Va., youth was listed in fair condition at Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center Sunday after he wrecked a car following a high-speed pursuit Saturday night on Chestnut Hill Road, a police official said.

Harpers Ferry Police Chief Donald Buracker said he approached the teenager's car on Washington Street about 9:07 p.m. Saturday when it quickly accelerated.

Buracker said he activated his emergency lights and chased the car on Washington Street toward Harpers Ferry and onto Union Street.

The suspect's car struck a guardrail at the intersection of Union Street and U.S. 340, then backed up and hit Buracker's cruiser, Buracker said.

The chase continued onto Chestnut Hill Road, where the driver lost control of his car on a curve and struck an embankment, Buracker said.

Buracker declined to release the teenager's name because of his age.
