Rep. Bartlett got a bad rap from letter writer

To the editor:

I'd like to respond to a letter that appeared in your Herald-Mail "Letters to the Editor" column a couple of months ago. After careful consideration concerning the bad rap that Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md. received, I'd like to respond and take issue with it.

As a registered Democrat and a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam conflict, I find it hard to understand why a fellow veteran would have such a hard time receiving help from Congressman Bartlett concerning veterans' issues.

Numerous times during the past few years, the congressman and staff in the Hagerstown office, Rita Downs (retired), Marcie Cousins, and Myra Kidd, have assisted me with my veterans' issues, and they have gone the extra mile to accomplish these tasks, no matter how complicated these issues may have appeared. On various occasions, I have even had private audiences with the congressman to discuss various issues. Positive results were always achieved in a satisfactory manner.

With this said, I'd like to personally thank Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and his Hagerstown office staff for a job well done on all of the problems that I have endured during the past few years with the Veterans Administration.

Snow removal was appreciated

To the editor:

I would just like to give thanks to all the people involved in clearing the roads. They had a very big task recently, and still have more winter to go.

I would also like to thank very much a gentleman who came down Md. 77 the other day on his front-end loader and cleared the big pile of snow from the end of our driveway and in front of the mailbox from where the plows were working.

We don't know who he was, but he saved us a lot of work. I know he had worked hard helping the community because I saw him pass the house the following two days, Many thanks to him.

'Thumbs up' to all the youth who won events

To the editor:

On Saturday, March 2, in the Thumbs Up section, The Herald-Mail gave a thumbs up to the Wlliamsport boys 3200 meter relay team, and rightly so.

The Herald-Mail forgot that the girls 3200 meter relay team also won gold at the state track meet. It also forgot to give a "thumbs up" to the Boonsboro boy who won gold in the 55 meter hurdles for the second year in a row.

Also, a Clear Spring girl who won the 1600 meter run, and the North Hagerstown girl who won the 800 meter run and the boy from Smithburg who won the high jump deserved mention.

If you're going to give a "thumbs up" to one team you should include all the proud winners, so here is a thumbs up from me. Keep up the good work, girls and boys.

Gary Harbaugh
Hagerstown
