James D. Spofford

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - James D. Spofford, 73, of Sun City and formerly of Lancaster, Pa., died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at his home.

Born Sept. 6, 1929, in Wheeling, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jean Dimmick and Franklin Spofford.

He was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., in 1951.

He retired from Exxon in 1986, after 33 years. He held executive marketing positions in Cumberland, Md., Harrisburg, Pa., Richmond, Va., Roanoke, Va., Washington, D.C., and Lancaster.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He was a member, trustee and elder of Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.

He was a member of Rotary International. He was a ten-star Rotarian, a Paul Harris Fellow and past president of Rotary Clubs in Lancaster and Cumberland.


He was an Eagle Scout.

He is survived by his wife, Joan R. Seal Spofford; one daughter, Linda Harris of Atlanta; one brother, Thomas Spofford of Columbus, Ind.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Rev. James Spofford, and one brother, Daniel Spofford.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will follow the service.
