March 07, 2003

The 11 members of the North Hagerstown High School Indoor Color Guard won first place Saturday in the Maryland State Indoor Guard championships at Westminster High School, according to coach Erica Sherrill.

Team members are seniors Kristen Bohner, Jessica Connor and Brittany Wood; juniors Amy Brown and Katie Buchanan; sophomores Tracy Hinkle and Jessica Sasser; and freshmen Emily Miles, Summer Rain Quintana, Kayla Rager and Brittany Vinson.

In addition to Sherrill, the coaching staff includes Jamie Lynn Connor, Marylisa Idol and NHHS band director Jeremy Karacz.

Saturday's show, entitled "The Line of Communication," included music by Sheryl Crow and TLC.

"The guard practices three days a week, for as many as 15 hours a week," Sherrill said. "They have been practicing since November."

Sherrill said they use three different types of equipment - flags, rifles and sabres. They also perform dance moves choreographed by Bohner.

Props they use in the show are built and transported by family and friends, Sherrill said.

"Our home show at NHHS is March 22 and will feature approximately 23 other guard and percussion units," Sherrill said. "Our own percussion line and guard will be performing, as well as the guard soloists and ensemble."

The show begins at 4 p.m. Admission costs $5 for adults and $3 for students.
