Denver D. McKinney

BOONSBORO - 1st Sgt. Denver D. "Mac" McKinney, USA Ret., 77, of 309 N. Main St., died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 14, 1925, in Betsy Layne, Ky., he was the son of the late Anthony and Frona Rowe McKinney.

He was a former insurance agent for Home Mutual Insurance Co. in Baltimore and retired after 15 years from Glen Construction Co. in Shady Grove, Md. He worked part time for Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro for the past 10 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He served in the Pacific Theater and the invasion of Okinawa. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Japan, Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He retired in 1968 from Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He received the Bronze Star, among many other awards.

He was a member and trustee of the Church of Christ at Hagerstown.

He was a member of World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.; F.W. Von Steuben Masonic Lodge 837 of Postach 2619-55515 Bad Kreuzhach, Germany; Olive Branch Chapter 34 Order of the Eastern Star in Keedysville; Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 of Boonsboro; and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ruby L. Keyton McKinney; two daughters, Teresa Kodish of Avis, Pa., and Marcy McKinney of Landsdale, Pa.; one son, Bob McKinney of Hagerstown; three sisters, Veloice McKinney of Columbus, Ohio, Bernice Fitch and Phyllis A. Pinson, both of Louisa, Ky.; two brothers, Ben McKinney of Hampton, Ohio, and Harry T. McKinney of Louisa; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Reathel Layne, and his twin brother, Denton McKinney.

Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Church of Christ at Hagerstown. Evangelist Casey R. Strunk will officiate. Burial with full military honors will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro.
