Mail Call 3/5

March 06, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I think its hilarious that they are still blasting Bill and Hillary Clinton two years after they have been out of office. I think it's funny that some sore loser Republican or whatever, they know that Bush stole the election and thought that everything was going to go smooth. But the truth is Bill Clinton was one of the best presidents that we have ever had and our country reached the ultimate in prosperity. Unfortunately, our country has gone nowhere, but downhill since the day Bush took office and they just can't accept it. Too bad, but Hillary Clinton will be president in 2008, you just watch and see."

"Snow is nature's way of telling adults that it's OK to behave like children."

"The walking situation has been terrible with the past big snows. We have to walk in the streets. A lot of people have not even bothered to shovel their sidewalks. My father worked for the city in the past and I remember that they made sure the sidewalks were clean, clear to the curb. Not everyone has a car, you know."

"To the person complaining about someone on disability. You should be ashamed. Did you ever think that this person may have a problem that is not visual? It sounds like you have a problem. You can work with disability for a while, but money gets deducted from the check. You need love in your heart."

"The Daily Mail recently printed a syndicated column that stated 'Gods and Generals' battle scenes were filmed in Virginia. It is common knowledge locally that 60 percent of the scenes were filmed in Washington County. Perhaps a correction is in order."

"I just called the Washington County Free Library and I can't get a live person to talk to. I just had one simple question and I can't even get a live person, no matter what I try."

"There were two responses in Mail Call about someone having trouble with a bird pecking on a window. One caller said that the bird is asking for more food because the bird is being fed, which is incorrect. Another said that they should open the window and let the bird in, which is ludicrous. In actuality, the bird is territorial and is defending its habitat by attacking its own reflection in the glass, viewing it as a competitor. All you have to do is place something light colored inside the window so the bird doesn't see its reflection in the glass and your problem is solved."

"I have been going to Dr. Ralph Salvagno for a year and wish all doctors, grocery stores and businesses would have the wonderful and pleasant staff that he has."

"I am sorry to hear about the people on Summit Avenue that got their tires slashed last week. Let me give you a little bit of advice, don't go to the state's attorney's office about it. Because the senior citizens that got their tires slashed at Potomac Towers a few years ago, got nothing from the guy that did it. They caught the guy that did iit. He admitted to it. But they didn't go for restitution. They said the suspect was too young. What stinks about this?"

"In response to the mommy's apron strings. A son is a son until he takes a wife, but a daughter is a daughter for the rest of her life. In other words, never."

"This is Betty on West Salisbury Street in Williamsport. I would like to thank the Williamsport Town employees. They came and knocked on my door, moved my car and when they were done removing the snow, they brought my car back to me. I thank you guys for doing a great job. Thanks again."

"To the residents on Winter Street, please remove snow from the sidewalk so the school kids can get through without walking into the street."

"I would like to voice my opinion about a tavern on Alternate 40. When the parking lot gets full, all the people park on the shoulder of the road, which is in violation of the code. You are not allowed to park on the side of a highway. But when you call the sheriff's department, they give you the run-around."

"I noticed in the Winston Cup race that Sterling Marlin spins out Jimmy Johnson right before the checkered flag, saying his car wobbled and he couldn't help it. He spun out Jeff Gordon last year when Gordon was winning the Daytona 500 and of course the year before that, he accidentally tapped Dale Earnhardt who was killed in the accident. When is NASCAR going to do something about Sterling Marlin?"
