Brunswick sent packing in South

BRUNSWICK, Md. - The Brunswick girls basketball team has been plagued by poor free throw shooting over the past several weeks.

Tuesday night was no different.

After a respectable 4-for-7 effort from the stripe in the first half, the Railroaders made just 1 of 9 second-half free throws in a season-ending, 55-50 loss to Poolesville in the Class 1A South region quarterfinals.

"The foul line hurt us again," Martin said. "That thing has been around since a basketball first bounced. You have to hit them from the free throw line. If you don't, it really comes back to get you."

The lackluster effort at the line in the final 16 minutes spoiled the Railroaders' stirring, third-period comeback. Trailing by seven at the half after weathering a barrage of long-range shots by the Falcons, Brunswick reeled off 13 unanswered points midway through the period for a 35-30 advantage.


Ashley Hickerson and Leah McCallum combined for nine points in the run, while Brunswick's leading scorers all season - Kacie Escamilla and Dana Shook - struggled in the second half.

Lisa Ganassa ended the Poolesville drought with a 3-pointer as the Falcons finished the half trailing 39-35.

Brunswick (11-9) had an opportunity to increase the lead before the half, but Shook was unable to hit a pair of free throws after an intentional foul, and the Railroaders turned the ball over on the ensuing possession before the end of the quarter.

"Any time that happens that late in the game, that's a key moment," Poolesville coach Fred Swick said.

That sequence was an emotional turning point, Martin said.

Less than two minutes into the fourth period, Poolesville (18-3) began a 13-2 run that finally took the wind out of the Railroaders.

With inside players Escamilla and McCallum saddled with four fouls apiece during much of the final eight minutes, the Falcons took advantage. Jamie Morningstar penetrated for two straight buckets before Ganassa's third 3-pointer of the game put things out of reach.
