Clyde B. Tucker


BOONSBORO - Capt. Clyde Burton Tucker (Ret.), 82, of 20816 Beaver Creek Road, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 29, 1920, in Steyer, Md., he was the son of the late Milton Edward and Jane Burton Tucker.

He was employed by the Maryland State Police for 36 years. He served as Barrack Commander at Northeast and Hagerstown and was Troop Commander of Frederick, Washington, Allegany and Garrett counties at his retirement.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Company K, 110th Infantry, 28th Division of the U.S. Army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was a member of Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren.

He was a member of AMVETS Post 10 of Hagerstown, Clopper-Michael American Legion Post 10 of Boonsboro, Thomas Pangborn Lodge 88 Fraternal Order of Police of Hagerstown, past president of Boonsboro Lions Club, former member of Washington County Selective Service Board and founder of Community Rescue Service in Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Freda E. Houpt Tucker; three sons, C. Wayne Tucker of Boonsboro, Russell E. Tucker of Simpsonville, Ky., and Gerald E. Tucker of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Tucker and Maddy Tucker.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro. The Rev. J. Mark Curran will officiate. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at noon.

Mary Ellen Truax


WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Mary Ellen Truax, 88, of 4684 Sipes Mill Road, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Fulton County Medical Center Extended Care Unit, McConnellsburg, Pa.

Born Sept. 24, 1914, in Big Cove Tannery, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George and Cora Shaw Lynch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy W. Truax, in 1988. They were married in 1934.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore, Pa.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris J. Truax of Crystal Spring, Pa., and Darlene Wheeler of Warfordsburg; one son, George Truax of Needmore; one sister, Maye Keefer of Needmore; three brothers, John Lynch of Big Cove Tannery, and Reed Lynch and Willard Lynch, both of McConnellsburg; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Truax; two sisters, Helen Waltz and Betty Everetts; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore. The Revs. Roger Truax and Belvy White will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Needmore.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Harrisonville, Pa., and Monday at 10 am. at the church.




Lucile S. Hoffman


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Lucile Smith Hoffman, 86, of 117 Northeast Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Aug. 6, 1916, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Roy C. and Elsie Irene Harbaugh Smith.

She was a 1934 graduate of Waynesboro High School and a 1944 graduate of Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing in Bryn Mawr, Pa., receiving a degree as a registered nurse.

She was a registered nurse and a private duty nurse. Prior to retiring in 1958, she worked at Waynesboro Hospital.

She was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard J. Hoffman, whom she married July 31, 1948; one sister, Catherine S. Layman of Fayetteville, Pa.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. James E. Lucas will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Monday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Catherine R. Burger


Catherine Rohrer Burger, 94, formerly of 7 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at North Holly Place, 240 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, where she was a resident.

Born April 3, 1908, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late George B. and Emma B. Repp Rohrer.

She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring.

She is survived by her husband, Harry Burger; one nephew, Douglas Shepley of Hagerstown; one great-niece; one great-nephew and two great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Edna M. Shepley, and two brothers, Mason Rohrer and Harold Rohrer.
