CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - After hearing from one new organization Tuesday, a committee can now begin weighing the requests from 10 agencies and the Borough of Chambersburg for a share of the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant program.
The Chambersburg Borough Council held two public hearings on the grants in February, with Tuesday's drawing the lone request from Phil Bennett, director of the Boys & Girls Club Chambersburg Clubhouse.
He asked for $10,000 to help the new group host a summer program focusing on children and careers.
The Boys & Girls Club opened its doors in January and so far has registered more than 100 youths between the ages of 6 and 18 at its South Third Street location in the Chambersburg Recreation Center.
"We primarily serve low-income, at-risk kids," he said.
Other service agencies and the borough made requests topping $650,000 at the first hearing earlier this month.
The borough will receive less than half that amount from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
