BOYS BASKETBALL

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - St. Maria Goretti finished the Baltimore Catholic League season with a 55-39 loss to McDonogh Sunday, the Gaels' third straight loss on the heels of seven consecutive wins.

Four Goretti turnovers during a key second-period stretch enabled McDonogh (23-4, 13-3) to break away from a 20-20 tie.

Goretti (17-16, 5-11) nearly went scoreless in the third period, with only a late bucket by Joey Breslin preventing the whitewash. Breslin and Derrick Davis had 10 points and Breslin also had eight rebounds.

The Gaels lost Davis midway through the third period when he picked up his fourth personal foul and was then hit with a technical, disqualifying him from the game.

Goretti opens the BCL tournament Friday at Goucher College with a return match against McDonogh set for 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
