Broadfording girls win MDCC title

February 24, 2003|by JACK HILL III

Broadfording wanted a sweep of the Mason Dixon Christian Conference boys and girls basketball titles on Saturday.

The Lions had to settle for one, instead.

No. 5 Broadfording's girls came away with a 39-29 win over the Cumberland Valley Christian School Blazers.

The boys dropped a 57-50 decision to the Faith Christian Academy Falcons.

n In the girls game, Broadfording (30-4) struggled with its shooting from inside the three-point line, but made enough from outside the arc and at the foul line.

"The clutch three-point shooting and foul-shooting really helped us out today," Broadfording coach Dana Gonzales said. "Jessica Biddle hit two key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and that helped to open the game up. Dee Brown also hit a key 3-pointer late in the game. We only had five two-pointers, but we made seven 3-pointers."

Meanwhile, Broadfording's man defense held CVCS (16-9) in check most of the game.

"We went to a man-to-man defense in the second half and that made a difference," Gonzales said. "They had to work real hard for their shots."

Brown had 16 points - including a trio of 3-pointers - and five assists for the Lions, who set a school record with it's 30th win of the season. Biddle had four 3s and finished with 14 points and five rebounds.

"We played hard and we played with a lot of heart," Biddle said. "We had some clutch shooting. ... I haven't shot that well in a long time."

Wheeler added seven rebounds and three steals for the Lions.

n In the boys' game, Marcus Ballard scored 22 points for Faith (19-3) in its win over Broadfording (24-11).

"Poor decision-making down the stretch was what cost us," Broadfording coach George Nunn said. "It might have been the pressure of the game or it might have been fatigue."

Senior forward Sean Moore had team-high totals of 20 points, 13 rebounds and six steals for Broadfording. Eric Longerbeam scored 12 points and Gene Johnson grabbed eight rebounds for the Lions.
