Mail Call for 2/14

February 17, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I am an 82-year-old and I have seen a lot of County Commissioners in my time, but I haven't seen one any worse than John Munson."

"Republicans, if you are serious about keeping your party alive and well in Washington County, then you better get rid of John Munson or the Democratic party will."

"To the person who serves in the local restaurant, if you don't like the $2.11 an hour then get another job. The government isn't forcing you to work that."

"A recent newspaper article said that there wasn't any protest to Funkstown raising water and sewer rates. I am a Funkstown resident and I didn't know about the increase until I read the article. I do not support one because our rates are high enough."

"I think that if the terrorists start doing things in our country again, we should start attacking any country that harbors the terrorists. Just give them a good shot to let them know what is going to happen. We don't have to have an all- out war with them. Just throw a bomb on one of their cities, just do whatever we have to do. But like someone said the other day, those same people, when the World Trade Center happened, were rejoicing in the streets. Get rough with them, start letting them know what is going to happen. We are going to kill their people if they are going to kill ours."

"Way to go, City of Hagerstown, hope everyone attended your 'Gods and Generals' had a nice parking place because if you had to go downtown for anything else that night, all the parking that is normally there for the public was restricted to permit only. You couldn't park in the parking deck, you couldn't park in the lot by the Visitors Center, you couldn't park in the lot behind the Playhouse. Where is a normal person supposed to park that has business to transact downtown? Maybe it was posted, but does that mean nobody else is supposed to come downtown to do business for any other business?"

"I am responding to the Mail Call that was in Wednesday's paper about the person who works in a local restaurant and thinks that a person should leave a percentage of a tip and they only make $2.11 an hour. If you are willing to make only $2.11 an hour and think that you can support your family on that, that's a joke. There are other jobs out there."

"In response to the person who only makes $2.11 an hour, I am surprised that you are working for $2.11 an hour, because you can't support a family. But a tip was originally for good service, not to pay wages for the employer. So if you can't afford to work for $2.11 an hour, then you need to go to Sheetz and work or something where you can make more money."

"Half of the businesses and the local people have left their flags at half mast. Please notify them and tell them to put them back at full mast. Wave that old flag high now."

"To the person who was talking about her snow angel, Clinton Knick. I wish you would leave his phone number in Mail Call, because if he is an angel, I have a place I would like him to snow plow for me."

"Does anyone out there know a solution to smelly feet? I wash them every night and put powder on them and in my shoes, but they still have an odor. Is there something I can soak them in or what can I do?"
