Area Roundup - Goretti's win streak comes to end

St. Maria Goretti's seven-game win streak ended with a sour note on Senior Night as the Gaels fell to Cardinal Gibbons 59-51 Thursday in a Baltimore Catholic League battle.

Goretti (17-14, 5-8) lost at the foul line as Gibbons secured the win with a 15-for-18 performance in the final quarter. All told, the Crusaders (17-10, 7-5) went 19 of 26 compared to Goretti's 2 of 4.

Goretti was whistled for 23 personals compared to nine for Gibbons, three of which were in the waning moments.

It was the first victory for Gibbons at the Gael Center since 1996.

The fateful period of the contest came with 5:30 to play when Gibbons put down seven straight free throws after Joey Breslin was hit with his fourth personal. Breslin was whistled with technical following a personal on Derrick Davis, who later fouled out. That stretched a one-point Gibbons' lead to 52-44.

Goretti scored three baskets, but Gibbons kept pace from the line with seven more free throws.

The Gaels held a 36-29 lead with 2:52 left in the third period before Gibbons roared back on a 3 and 2-pointer from Ken Hasrouck and two free throws by Brahn Jenkins.

Davis finished with 19 points in his final home appearance along with seven assists. Fellow seniors Breslin, Steve Costello and Mike Green had six, five and two points.

FROSTBURG, Md. - Sophomore Alex Tyler scored a career-high 24 points and Clear Spring hit 16 of 22 foul shots in the second half to knock off Beall.

The Blazers (8-11) led by one point at the half, but used pressure defense to take a 54-45 lead after three quarters.

Will Worthington added 20 points for Clear Spring while Cody Beard added 12.

Anderson also had nine rebounds and three blocked shots for Brunswick (12-7, 9-7), while Dykes pulled down six rebounds and gave out four assists.

Josh Foley led Williamsport (9-9, 6-8) with 15 points and Ben Jordan grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wildcats.
