February 10, 2003

BOYS BASKETBALL

BALTIMORE St. Maria Goretti continued its winning streak Sunday afternoon with a 54-44 victory over Loyola Blakefield with plenty of help from one of the youngsters. It was the sixth straight win for No. 2 Goretti.

The Gaels (16-13, 4-8) emerged with a Baltimore Catholic League victory as sophomore Joey Spierenburg tossed in a career-high 15 points to support Joey Breslin's 17 points.

Goretti took control of the game with inside play from Breslin and Spierenburg after Derrick Davis went to the sidelines from aggravating a previous shoulder injury.

A 14-10 deficit after the first period turned into a 26-19 halftime lead and the Gaels kept Loyola Blakefield (9-18, 1-12) at distance throughout the second half.
