Samuel F. Swope Jr.


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -Samuel F. Swope Jr., 82, of Manorcare Health and Rehabilitation Center, and formerly of Waynesboro, Pa., died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at the home.

Born Feb. 15, 1920, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel F. and Ruth Bucher Swope.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Louise Zinn Swope, in 1966; and by his second wife, Madge L. Kuykendall Swope, in 1993. They were married Feb. 1, 1973.

He worked at the family service station in Gettysburg, Pa.; owned and operated Penn Supreme Restaurant in Waynesboro; and retired in 1985 as owner and operator of the Parlor House Restaurant in Waynesboro.

He is survived by three daughters, Suzanne L. Besecker of Mohnton, Pa., Pamela Newman of Hagerstown, and Nancy J. Hockenberry of Waynesboro; four sons, William F. Swope of Waynesboro, Jeffery Swope of Columbia, Md., Samuel D. Swope of Mercersburg, Pa., and Randall S. Swope of Rio DeJaneiro, Brazil; three sisters, Betty Johnson of Florida, Jane Blosser of Carlisle, Pa., and Ruth Ann Rodgers of Alexandria, Va.; two brothers, Richard Swope of Dillsburg, Pa., and Julius Swope of Florida; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, David Swope.

Services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Linda Berseng Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sharon D. Furlow


Sharon Denise Furlow, 47, of 4 W. Magnolia Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 31, 1955, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Katie Harris Furlow of Baltimore and the late Frederick Furlow.

She attended Hagerstown Community College.

She was formerly employed by Fort Ritchie for 12 years.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Melissa K. Breland and Shanese G. Clarke, both of Hagerstown; one son, Raymon L. Breland Sr. of Hagerstown; two sisters, Bernadette Furlow of Baltimore, and Barbara Shuler of Hagerstown; three brothers, Patrick Furlow of Hagerstown, Michael Furlow of Baltimore, and Frederick Furlow of Hampton, Va.; five grandchildren; and her fianc, William Pigg of Hagerstown.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Saturday at noon at the funeral home.




Doris A. Forsyth


Doris Audrey Forsyth, 68, formerly of Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 3, 1934, in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Oscar Marshall and Edith Doris Anderson Dixon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Forsyth Sr.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Sykesville, Md.

She was a Cub Scout den mother.

She is survived by three sons, Robert H. Forsyth Jr. of Sykesville, David M. Forsyth of Hagerstown, and Michael S. Forsyth Sr. of Manchester, Md.; one sister, Patricia Green of Arizona; two brothers, Oscar Dixon of Sykesville, and Richard Dixon of Gamber, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, William R. Forsyth.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, Sykesville. The Rev. Roland Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery, Sykesville.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Vivian R. Glesner


Vivian R. "Bobbie" Glesner, 87, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 19, 1915, in Cartersville, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Robert and Daysye Anna Burger Stotelmyer.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Max Wade Glesner, in 1973.

She retired from Lena Darner Boutique in Hagerstown, where she worked for 60 years.

She was a member of Salem Reformed Church United Church of Christ in Hagerstown.

She is survived by one son, Jeffrey L. Glesner of Richmond, Va.; and one brother, Joseph R. Stotelmyer of Hagerstown.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Vivian A. Keefer.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, North Potomac Street, Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen E. Wagoner will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Bible Brethren Church Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Visitation will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

Rachel Y. Marsh


HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -Rachel Y. Marsh, 66, of Hedgesville, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Heartland of Martinsburg.

Born May 22, 1936, in Ontonagon, Mich., she was the daughter of the late George and Hilia Hemming Ylen.
