Saints' second brutal

February 06, 2003|by JACK HILL III

ST. JAMES - One period was a major difference in a loss for St. James.

The Flint Hill Huskies outscored the Saints, 25-4, during the second quarter to build a 41-18 halftime lead.

That put the Huskies in control as they went on to beat the Saints 67-42 on Wednesday night in a Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference boys' game.

"We had a bad second quarter," St. James coach Patrick Gahan said. "But other than that, the other quarters were pretty close. Last time, they ran us out of their gym (74-23 on Dec. 6).

"This is a tremendous improvement for us," Gahan said. "We did a lot better today on both offense and defense. Both teams are still going with the same main players. We have played every team better the second time around."

Forward Mike Christensen poured in 31 points, including four three-point field goals, for Flint Hill (10-8, 7-2). Russ Watts added 13 points and eight rebounds, while D.J. Girma came off of the bench to score nine points for the Huskies.

"I think that we just played very solid in the paint," Flint Hill coach Jim Fitzpatrick said. "We just had too much size for them offensively and defensively. That obviously helped us to score a lot of baskets and win the rebounding game. I give St. James a lot of credit. They have made tremendous strides in improving since the last time that we played them. They are very well-coached."

Sophomore power forward Andrew Dewey collected team-high totals of 12 points and eight rebounds, while Brock Twigg added nine points and seven rebounds for St. James (4-11, 2-9). Jimmy Douglas scored nine points and Jordan Ottley grabbed seven rebounds for the Saints.

"I believe that we have been improving in all phases of the game," Gahan added. "We have been playing a little bit more tenaciously on defense. We have been making better decisions on offense."
