Timing is key for confirmation

February 03, 2003|by LAURA ERNDE

In politics, sometimes timing is everything.

On Feb. 17, Robert L. Flanagan is scheduled to appear before Sen. Donald F. Munson and the other members of the Executive Nominations Committee as a prelude to his Senate confirmation.

As a Republican delegate who often traded barbs with Democrats, Flanagan will need all the help he can get from the Democrat-controlled group.

Last week, Flanagan delivered some good news to Munson, R-Washington, and other local lawmakers.

The state agreed to commit $8 million to extend the runway at Hagerstown Regional Airport.

"Obviously, you've got my vote," Munson said to Flanagan with a laugh after the meeting ended.

Munson, R-Washington, then insisted that Flanagan would have had his vote regardless of winning the project.

Munson snubbed in governor's address

When Gov. Robert Ehrlich delivered his State of the State address last week, he paused to recognize seven lawmakers who have each served 28 years in the Maryland General Assembly.

The list was not complete, however.

Ehrlich overlooked Sen. Donald F. Munson, R-Washington, who started his public service career in the House of Delegates in 1975.

But Munson wasn't alone. Veteran senators Ida G. Ruben, D-Montgomery, Nathaniel Exum, D-Prince George's, and Leo E. Green, D-Prince George's, were also snubbed. Like Munson, all three have 28 years of experience.

McKee adds new toll-free number

Del. Robert A. McKee has added a new phone number so his constituents in Smithsburg, Ringgold and Cascade can call his district office without paying for a long-distance call.

The number is 1-877-223-9031.

Constituents in Williamsport can still use 301-223-8030. McKee's office is at Williamsport Town Hall.

Democrats' monthly meeting set for Feb. 11

The Washington County Democratic Central Committee's regularly monthly meeting will be Feb. 11 at the Grille at Park Circle restaurant.

The meeting, which starts at 5:15 p.m., is open to the public and interested persons are welcome to attend, said committee Secretary Kathy Hall.

For any questions about the meetings, or for more information regarding the Washington County Democratic Party, call 301-797-4385.

Resumes accepted for school board vacancy

People interested in serving on the Washington County Board of Education are urged to submit rsums as soon as possible.

A steering committee will review applications for the vacancy and send three recommendations to Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich, said Washington County Delegation Chairman Del. Robert A. McKee, R-Washington.

The committee members are Washington County Commissioner James Kercheval, School Board member Bernadette Wagner, Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce member Phil Kelly, Citizens Advisory Committee President Gary Nally, Parent-Teacher Association President Scott Nicewarner and former board members B. Marie Byers and Jan Cirincione.

Anyone who is interested should send a rsum and cover letter to the committee in care of Washington County Schools Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Morgan, 820 Commonwealth Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
