Mail Call for 1/31

February 03, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"To the person complaining about the executive director at the library. This is not the director's library, this is the taxpayers' library. The citizens who pay their taxes, who work every day, not for the ones who lay around all day. These people are able-bodied people and should work. They shouldn't be accepting handouts all the time."

"I see in the paper where they made 17 alcohol related arrests in a three-day period during Super Bowl weekend. I would like to know why you didn't put those names in the paper."

"How soon our so-called friends forget. If it weren't for the United States, the Berlin Wall would still be up."

"For the person that said the director of the library should put on a pot of coffee and let the homeless people in there. Let the person who called that in give her name and address and we will send those folks around to your place for coffee."

"This is The Daily Mail carrier out in the Smithsburg area. I currently deliver papers in the Edgemont, Greensburg, Ringgold and the Leitersburg area and I would like to thank all my customers who left Christmas cards and all of their support. Also to the people in the Ringgold and Leitersburg area to know that in the near future, I will no longer be delivering your papers, due to some changes. I won't be delivering around Ringgold, Windy Haven Road and Leitersburg. I have been a carrier around there for a very long time and I just wanted to let you know that there will be a new carrier soon."

"To the person who said to leave Ron Bowers alone, you are the one who needs to get a life. Bowers is getting paid by the taxpayers, the car that he was driving is paid for by the taxpayers. Therefore, anyone who pays taxes has a right to criticize him. If it would have been someone in the private sector, they would have gotten fired."

"Gee, why not stop at coffee in the library, let's add a salad bar, too."

"The host on 'American Idol' is too mean on the people who come on the show to compete. He shouldn't say some of the things he says to those people."

"Does anyone know of a place in Hagerstown that has bingo on Friday or Saturday nights?"

"I also have problems with a TV channel in the evening and I live on Marshall Street west."

"I have one question: Why does the dentist have to charge $100 to pull one tooth?"

"I am calling about the Hagerstown City Council. They are supposed to be so poor. I agree with putting the council meetings and the work sessions on TV so more people could learn about it. But what is this about them spending more than $100,000 for a slide for the Potterfield Pool that we are already subsidizing? I don't think the council should spend that much for a water slide."

"This is Tom from the We Care Neighborhood Watch Group, our next meeting is Feb. 4, 6:30 p.m. at the VFW, snow date, Feb. 11. Our watch area now includes Franklin Street from Potomac to Cannon Avenue and Locust Street from Franklin to Antietam Street. We would appreciate it if all of you who live in our watch area would attend our next meeting to help us make the neighborhoods a better place for you to live and work in and to help us reach our goal."

"I think President Bush should refer to people like Susan Sarandon as the Actors of Evil."
