Lady Hawks soar past PGCC

January 30, 2003|by JACK HILL III

The Hagerstown Community College Hawks women's basketball team did not panic when it fell behind 10-2 in the first 4 1/2 minutes of Wednesday's game against Prince George's.

The Hawks just responded by outscoring the Owls 32-12 the rest of the half on their way to a 69-51 win in a Maryland JuCo Conference women's basketball game at the HCC athletic complex.

"I think the last 10 minutes of the first half was the key to the ballgame and the fact that we rebounded the ball fairly well," HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. "Our pressure defense and our rebounding helped us to come back. We were able to coast in the second half."

Freshman point guard Kim Davis had 19 points, including a 9-for-11 performance from the free throw line, and four assists for HCC (13-7, 7-3).

"We started out slow," Davis said. "We came out a little bit sluggish. We knew that we had to pick up our defense. We had to run our offense as smooth as possible. It was a good effort, except for the first five minutes."

"Kim Davis is getting better every game," Palmer added. "She is getting more comfortable with the offense that we run and she sees the floor very well."

Kristy Gaines had 17 points and four blocked shots, while Autumn Parson had 13 points and seven rebounds for HCC. Ashley Mason hauled in 12 rebounds, Alicia Romero grabbed seven rebounds and Amanda McGhee had three steals.

Prince George's falls to 9-8 overall, 3-6 in the conference.
