The Hagerstown Community College Hawks women's basketball team made 22 of 39 free throws Monday evening, using the charity stripe to upset the league-leading Catonsville Cardinals 76-68 in a Maryland JUCO Conference game.

Freshman guard Amanda McGhee made only one field goal, but converted 10 of her 12 foul shots.

"I'm happy to get my foul shots," McGhee said. "I was off for the last couple of games. I'm glad that I was able to get it back.

"We're working together as a team and we are communicating a lot better. We're doing a lot better now than what we did earlier in the season. We just have to keep it up."

McGhee also had seven rebounds, while sophomore center Kristy Gaines collected team-high totals of 21 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for HCC (12-7, 6-3). Gaines scored 14 of her points in the second half.

Kim Davis chipped in with 17 points, eight steals and seven assists for the Hawks. Autumn Parson added 11 points.

"I thought that we did a good job of attacking them inside the paint and that is what we wanted to do," Hawks coach Marlys Palmer said. "We were able to get some trips to the foul line and then we made our foul shots. Our best offensive players are our big post players. So we have to go with a more physical, inside ballgame and it worked tonight."

Tiffany Tucker came off the bench to score all eight of her points during the first half as HCC built a 34-24 halftime lead.

"Tiffany Tucker gave us a big lift in the first half," Palmer said. "She played a real inspired ballgame."

Guard Melissa Workman scored 17 of her 21 points during the second half and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the way for Catonsville (15-2, 8-1). Jessica Swiney scored 17 points, while Dannielle Packer added 11 points and seven rebounds. All of Catonsville's top three scorers in the ballgame fouled out during the second half.
