Austin D. Poffenberger

Austin David Poffenberger, 94, of 103 Buttercup Drive and formerly of Maryland Avenue, Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 21, 1908, in Locust Grove, Md., he was the son of the late Lawrence Elmer and Mary Sofia Smith Poffenberger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Ogden Poffenberger, in 2000.

He worked at Pangborn in Hagerstown for 20 years and J.W. Myers Wholesale Grocery Co. in Hagerstown for 24 years. He retired from Creasey Co. in Hagerstown.

He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Hagerstown.

He was a former member of Moose Lodge of Hagerstown.

He is survived by a daughter, Marie V. Zeigler of Hagerstown; a son, Richard A. Poffenberger of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael D. Zeigler, seven sisters and three brothers.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Locust Grove Cemetery in Rohrersville.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at noon at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740, or to a charity of one's choice.




Helen L. Berger

Helen Leiter Berger, 94, of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 12, 1908, in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late William and Minnie Keller Leiter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn M. Berger, in 1967.

She was a Protestant.

She is survived by five nieces including Estelle Pitcock of Hagerstown, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by seven sisters, Bessie Itnyre, Ethel Shank, Ruth Poole, Lillian Shirey, Edna Leiter, Frances Stine and Louise Lushbaugh, and four brothers, Herbert Leiter, Lester Leiter, John Leiter and Henry Leiter.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Monday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Vada L. Pine

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Vada L. Pine, 69, of 41 Surrey Drive and formerly of 863 Stouffer Ave., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Feb. 20, 1933, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Elizabeth Crouse Keyser.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald H. "Jack" Pine, in 2000. They were married Sept. 2, 1947.

She retired in 1993 from Econo Lodge in Chambersburg where she was the head housekeeper. Earlier, she worked at Tip-Top Cleaners in Chambersburg and the former Chambersburg Laundry.

She is survived by a daughter, Donna Mickley of Chambersburg; a son, Robert Pine of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Dorcas Brake of Greencastle, Pa., and Sara McGowan of Chambersburg; one granddaughter; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; a great-grandson; and her caregivers, Audrey and Ronald Greco of Mercersburg, Pa.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Revs. Roy Brake and Paul Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Norland Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Monday at noon at the funeral home.




M. Veronica Keefer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - M. Veronica Keefer, 95, of 226 W. Queen St., died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chambersburg.

Born April 29, 1907, in Hamilton Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Mary Dimler Kimple.

She retired in 1975 from the Chambersburg Area School District. She also worked for Weatherization in Chambersburg, retiring in 1984. Earlier, she worked for the former Curtis Publishing Co., representing fire companies in Franklin County, Pa.

She attended Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg where she was a member of Colombian Ladies.

She was a member of Ladies of the Franklin County Democratic Committee.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Powell of Valrico, Fla., and Zita Hamilton of Chambersburg; two sisters, Martha J. Sclichter of Chambersburg and Lauretta Myers of Louisville, Ky.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg. The Rev. James R. O'Brien will be celebrant. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg where recitation of the rosary will be at 8:15 p.m.
