Woodworking shop is destroyed in fire Friday near Maugansville

January 27, 2003

A woodworking shop on Broadfording Road in the Maugansville area was destroyed by a fire Friday morning, Maugansville Fire Chief Phil Ridenour said.

The shop at 17807 Broadfording Road is owned by Mark Raidt.

Firefighters got the call at 10:32 a.m.

Ridenour said the building was a total loss. The damage was estimated at $80,000.

An old sawmill behind the structure and tools and woodworking material inside the shop were also destroyed, he said.

Ridenour said Raidt noticed a fire in the chimney area and went to get water but the fire had spread rapidly by the time he returned.

"The whole roof was on fire by then," Ridenour said.

The fire was under control in 45 minutes, but crews were there for about four hours cleaning up.

About 30 firefighters from Maugansville, Hagerstown, Long Meadow, Williamsport and Halfway responded. The Washington County Emergency Services Rehab Unit, Air Unit and Community Rescue Service also responded.
