HAGERSTOWN - Matthew Scott Comer Sr. was a good father to his children, said the former girlfriend of the man killed early Saturday when the vehicle he was driving crashed into G.A. Miller Lumber Co. Inc. in Williamsport.

Shawna Hawks said he was close to his daughter, Sabrina Comer, 5, and was just starting to know his son, Matthew Comer Jr., who is just 3.

"It's going to be hard for them to know their dad is gone," Hawks said Sunday afternoon from her Hagerstown home.

Hawks said Matthew Comer Sr. moved a lot when he was younger.

Hawks' other son, Dustin, 9, wasn't Matthew Comer Sr.'s son but he was also close to Comer when he visited Sabrina and Matthew Jr., she said.

Comer, who died at the scene of the 3:30 a.m. accident, was visiting from the Pittsburgh area where he lived, Hawks said. His sister, Kelly Delores Galla, and Hawks' uncle, Ronald William Curry, were in the backseat when the car hit the building.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department said the accident happened on West Potomac and Commerce streets.

Comer, 33, was driving his sister's GMC Jimmy north on Potomac Street when the vehicle left the road at a turn and traveled through a culvert before slamming into Miller Lumber Co., police said.

Curry was treated and released from Washington County Hospital. Galla was in fair condition Sunday night, hospital officials said.
