Woman in critical condition following crash in city

Hagerstown City Police are continuing their investigation into an accident in the 500 block of West Church Street Wednesday afternoon that sent a man and a woman in their 70s to Washington County Hospital.

Vivian Robert Glesner, 77, of 14011 Maugansville Road, was in critical condition Wednesday night, said a nursing supervisor at the hospital.

The man, who is also 77, was in fair condition, hospital officials said. His name and address were unavailable from police Wednesday night.

Community Rescue Service responded to the 2:39 p.m. accident along with Western Enterprise firefighters.

"I know (the man) because he has lived in an apartment right behind where I live for many years," said Michael Knode, who lives at 205 High St.

Knode said he had walked over to see what happened when he saw his wife running toward the accident scene with a blanket.

"When I got there, all I saw was a person lying on the street and a lady lying on the ground on the driver's side" of the car, Knode said.

As he stood at the corner of High and Church streets, Knode pointed to the white Oldsmobile that was wedged against a building on the opposite side of the street. The trunk was pushed up against the wall and broken glass was scattered on the ground.

"It is kind of freaky," Knode said.

There was a jacket lying on the sidewalk in front of the car and a pair of sunglasses near the driver's side door.

Officer Stephen Magaha is heading the investigation into the accident. An accident reconstruction expert was expected to join the investigation team.
