Mail Call for 1/22

January 23, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"One would think that churches would treat their employees properly, but I found that not to be the case for all the churches in Hagers-town, at least one in particular."

"The EPA and the state of Maryland have known of the problem at the chemical plant on Mitchell Avenue for more than 25 years. Now the City Council, using taxpayers' money, is going to spend more than $60,000 to see what can be done. Who owns the property? Who is in charge?"

"It used to be that, in the city of Hagerstown, you could talk to a city policeman and actually carry on a good, intelligent conversation. I don't care how the police treat the criminals, but when it comes to talking to the everyday man on the street, a lot of the young policemen need to be taught some etiquette and told about their arrogance. Other than that, most of them are doing a great job."

"To the person who reported me for not taking care of my dog, I know who you are. For your information, I feed and give water to my dog every day. I think you only did it to be mean. Did you ever go back and check the dog's dishes to see if she had food and water? The man from animal control said that my dog was well-taken care of. Get a life."

"I would like to know why the city wants to raise taxes on city residents again? They did this last year and now all of a sudden they have enough money to supply a thousand recycle bins to the public? I think the trash company should be doing this. They are probably the only ones who benefit from the recycling."

"Someone wanted to know what channel 'Candid Camera' was on. It is on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m., channel 23, PAX TV."

"One evening, I took my one daughter, who is 6, over to City Park to go sled riding and we met a sweet little girl there by the name of Angel. She goes to Lincolnshire Elementary. Thanks for sharing your sled riding with my daughter. We enjoyed meeting you. You are a sweet little girl. Thanks, Jennifer."

"In regards to the benefit auction for R.J. Elswick, the West Virginia state trooper. Todd Webster and his crew did an outstanding job organizing this event."

"To the person making the comment about if it weren't for George Bush, Charlie Reese wouldn't have a column because he wouldn't have anyone to bash. Charlie Reese is, without a doubt, the best columnist in any newspaper around. He tells it like it is. What he says is always right on the money and the truth."

"I am calling about the person who complained about the person they take care of smelling like smoke whenever they got off the van or bus from ARC. First of all, I work for ARC of Washington County. Their employees are not allowed to smoke on the buses, vans, cars or the house where they work. So, if the person you are taking care of smells like smoke, it's possible that the person who is loading the van or buses is smoking outside, which is fine, they are out in the open air."

"I would like to know why the West End of Hagerstown doesn't have a Daily Mail correspondent? We are the only area that is excluded. We have items of interest, just like the North and South Ends of Hagerstown."

"To the person who called in about the insurance man selling you Medicare and supplement insurance and giving them life insurance. My name is Jennifer, 240-313-9295. I tried to call your number, but it was not the right number. Call me. I may be able to help you out with this."

Editor's note - An incorrect phone number was called in to the Mail Call line by the woman having difficulty with Medicare and supplemental insurance. She was looking for others who may have experienced the same problem. Her correct number is 301-797-6008.

"To the person looking for the Hedgehog Beanie Baby. My daughter has one and would like to get in touch with this woman. Call back and leave your number. We will call you."

"I have a Hedgehog Beanie, call me at 240-420-6261."

"Does anyone know what you can do to bananas to preserve them before you put them in fruit salad so they don't turn brown? Is there something that you can soak them in to prevent them from turning brown in fruit salad?"
