Mail Call for 1/21

January 22, 2003

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I just wanted to make a comment on the state paying $36,000 for a portrait of Glendening. I thought for sure that Tim Rowland would pick up on this and make a comment. I think it's terrible."

"About the woman talking about people not shoveling their walks so the children can walk to school. Well, as soon as it snows, the schools are closed. So what does it matter, they don't have school anyway."

"For Christina Clark - she wrote a column on A4 under 'Humane Society has problems.' I read your column and I understand where you are coming from. I agree that there are problems there. All you have to do is write to Washington, D.C., and you will get somewhere. You have to remember there is always someone higher than them, so if you aren't getting anywhere with them, you will see that things will get done the right way. I agree taxpayers' money and the animals deserve much better."

"To Washington County Taxpayers: The five new county commissioners, only one of them has a college background. All county commissioners should have at least two years of college. That way, we don't have to pay others to audit the Board of Education and other businesses for overspending."

- From a taxpayer and a senior citizen.

"I want to thank CRS and the emergency room and all the people who X-rayed me, especially the CRS people, the young man and young woman. I had a fractured pelvis and couldn't walk. It was a very trying experience. I am a lot better now and I just wanted to thank them. It means a lot to have people take the time to show they care."

"By the way, I know where the county commissioners can save $60,000 a year by cutting two county commissioners."

"My name is Brian at Williamsport High School. I am calling because there was a person complaining in Mail Call about the language for the play at Williamsport High School. I just wanted to say that it's an honor to be one of the schools selected to do the play. We are all adults, we aren't in fourth grade anymore. We have all heard this language before and it's stupid to complain about it because this is just acting."

"This is directed to the person who has lived in Funkstown for 25 years and has been retired for 10 years. I don't know who you are, but my family moved into Funkstown in 1790 and there are still about 15 or 20 of them. When I lived there, the community park was called The Commons. There have been improvements since then."

"I went to Elizabeth Court to see a friend of mine. Their Valentine tree is beautiful in their community room. Anyone who goes down to Elizabeth Court should go to the community room and see their Valentine tree."

"To the person who said about the sidewalks not being cleaned for the kids to go to school. Did you ever stop to think that people get up early to go to work and don't have time to shovel the sidewalk? I have a solution for the kids, wear boots, we did."

"I would like to say welcome home and hope you are feeling better to Mr. Marks from all your neighbors."

"To anyone who thinks that Washington County basketball teams get home cooking when they play at home, all you had to do was be at the Smithsburg/Middletown game on Friday, Jan. 17, and you would have seen that no team from Washington County gets home cooking."

"After reading the Jan. 17 paper, this is the worst group of county commissioners to ever be put into office. You have all Republicans who don't know what they are doing. I hope the Republican voters are happy."

"The doctors who might go on 'strike' can afford to do so. Why do you think their malpractice insurance is so high? Because the answer is simple, 'bad doctors.' Why is car insurance so high, 'bad drivers.' Get the picture? The TV news report stated that more than 1,500 surgical instruments are left inside patients every year after operations. That is only the tip of the iceberg. Doctors, get your act together or find another job."

"If anyone found a little small poodle that has a bad right hip and answers to the name of Coco. It has a red flea collar and also has a collar for the dog tag. It was taken last Thursday out of the yard at 247 N. Mulberry St. If anyone sees this dog, call me at 301-393-5684. This dog belongs to a man who is 86 years old."

"Inkspot. I thought that was one of our current county commissioners wearing a pair of bunny ears. You have to admit the resemblance is quite uncanny."

"I want to know what is going on with that weird guy in the orange jump suit on that Garth Brooks Dr. Pepper commercial? What is he doing there? He is a freak."
