Deanna E. Somers

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Deanna Elaine Staley Somers, 64, of The Village of Laurel Run Nursing Home, and formerly of 10883 Coral Ridge Road, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Oct. 16, 1938, in South Mountain, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Susan Barnes Staley.

She attended school in South Mountain.

She was employed as a nurse's aide by Samuel Dixon State Hospital in South Mountain in the 1960s and 1970s. She worked in various positions at Kenney Shoe Factory in Fairfield, Pa., retiring in the late 1980s.

She was a member of South Mountain Fire Co.

She is survived by two sisters, Lillian Kiser of Greenville, Pa., and Isabelle Sites of Chambersburg; one brother, Eugene A. Staley of South Mountain; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Monn and Betty Blizzard; and one brother, Thomas Staley.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa. Burial will follow in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.

The family will receive friends Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.




Evelyn V. Richards

BOONSBORO - Evelyn Virginia Richards, 87, of 8507 Mapleville Road, and formerly of 367 Antietam Drive in Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Fahrney-Keedy Home.

Born July 9, 1915, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary Eyler Shackelford.

She was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Arthur B. Richards Sr.; one son, Arthur B. Richards Jr. of Hagerstown; two sisters, Reva Parkinson of Hagerstown, and Geraldine Bartles of Falling Waters, W.Va.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda; and one brother, Melvin Shackelford.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Revs. Edward L. Poling and Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Virginia M. Kindle

SMITHSBURG - Virginia M. Ridenour Kindle, 74, of 13186 Edgemont Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at her home.

Born Jan. 3, 1929, in Cavetown, she was the daughter of the late Earl D. Ridenour Sr. and Irene Wolfe Ridenour.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford W. Kindle Sr., in 1994. They were married Feb. 13, 1943.

She attended Smithsburg schools.

She worked for Doubleday Books in Smithsburg and Freeman's Shoe Factory in Waynesboro, Pa. She was a floor worker at Regency Thermographers in Waynesboro for 15 years, retiring in 1991.

She was a member of National AARP.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn L. Barkdoll of Smithsburg, and Sondra L. Cavanaugh of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one son, Clifford W. Kindle Jr. of Clear Spring; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl D. Ridenour Jr. and Donald E. Ridenour.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Rev. Mark C. Mooney will officiate. Burial will follow in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.




Carol L. Hill

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Carol L. Hill, 61, of 456 S. Carlisle St., died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born July 15, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Foster Melvin and Esther Walker Weller.

She worked at Citicorp in the customer relations department.

She is survived by one daughter, Cherry Mellott of Breezewood, Pa.; two sons, Luke Hill of McConnellsburg, Pa., and Rex Hill of Florida; five sisters, Dorthea Hann of Cito, Pa., Edith Mellott of Chambersburg, Pa., Linda Thomas of Lemasters, Pa., Saunie Shives of Shippensburg, Pa., and Susan Mellott of Needmore, Pa.; three brothers, Robert Weller of Greencastle, Harold Weller of Hustontown, Pa., and Theodore Weller of McConnellsburg; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one son, Matt Hill; two infant sisters; and one infant brother.

Services will be Monday at 9 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, McConnellsburg. The Rev. Donald Bard will officiate. Burial will be in Rehobeth Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Monday at 8 a.m. at the funeral home.




James C. Butts

WESTMINSTER, Md. - James C. "Jim" Butts, 78, of Westminster, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at his home.

Born Nov. 12, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles O. and Margaret Adams Butts.

He was a 1953 graduate of Western Maryland College, where he also received his master's degree.

He was employed by the State of Maryland Employment Service as a supervisor and veterans representative, retiring in 1988.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre.
