MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Police said a 12-year-old boy killed in a skiing accident Friday was visiting Whitetail Mountain Resort with a group from Gaithersburg, Md.

Pennsylvania State Police identified the youth as Samuel Johnson of Kensington, Md.

The youth was skiing close to the edge of a trail at Whitetail at around 3:15 p.m. Friday when he lost a ski, went off the trail and hit a tree, police said.

A passing skier discovered the boy unconscious beside a novice trail at around 3:35 p.m. and notified a lift operator, who contacted the resort's ski patrol, a Whitetail manager said Saturday.

Members of the ski patrol began CPR and called for emergency help.

He was flown to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown by Maryland State Police helicopter, where he was pronounced dead at 4:37 p.m.
