Hopes are building that next Sunday's auction of celebrity souvenirs and other choice items in Hagerstown will ring up a tidy sum for the West Virginia trooper who is recuperating at a Georgia hospital after being shot in the head in October.

Organized by the Hagerstown City Police, Maryland State Police and Washington County Sheriff's Department, the Jan. 19 auction gets under way at 3 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton on Dual Highway.

Among the high-profile items up for bids are a Mario Lemieux autographed hockey puck, a baseball signed by Derek Jeter and a Dale Jarrett hat.

In addition to those items, the auction will also feature Aberdeen Ironbirds baseball hats, Meadowlark Lemon autographed basketballs, autographed Ken Griffey Jr. and Mark McGwire Wheaties boxes, a Brooks Robinson autographed baseball, a Doug Flutie autographed football, a Derek Jeter autographed rookie card, a Richard Petty autographed poster, a Cal Ripken Sr. autographed baseball card and a Mark Blount autographed baseball hat.

Other collectible items donated so far include a shadow box Civil War bullet, button and ball; an Amy Grant autograph; dozens of cash gift cards; guitars; a three-day vacation getaway; a Greaseman autographed book; several golf outings; and a duck/goose hunt.

Food gift certificates have been donated by Texas Roadhouse, Ground Round, Roccoco, Garfield's, Four Points Sheraton, Burhans Station, Brother's Pizza, Rhubarb House and T.G.I. Friday's, as well as Phil and Jerry's meat certificates.

All proceeds will benefit Trooper R.J. Elswick, who remains hospitalized in Georgia after being shot in the head during a domestic call in the Hedgesville, W.Va., area on Oct. 10.

Items or money for pickup can be arranged by calling 301-739-8577, ext. 235.
