John A. Moran

John A. Moran, 89, formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, Pa.

Born Nov. 23, 1913, he was the son of the late Michael D. and Mary Moylan Moran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katharine Hughes Moran, in 2000.

He attended Deerfield Academy and the University of Vermont. He was a 1939 graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School.

During World War II, he served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946.

Following the war, he completed his residency in surgery at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital in New York City. He practiced medicine in Hagerstown from 1942 to 1988.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathy Scheerer of Center Valley, Pa.; a son, Jack Moran of Phoenix, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, North Potomac Street, Hagerstown, with the recitation of prayers at 5 p.m.

Cora M. DeHaven

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Cora M. DeHaven, 101, of Valley View Nursing Home, who died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, is survived by a son, Douglas L. DeHaven of Phoenix City, Ala.




Walter A. Schwartz Jr.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Walter A. Schwartz Jr., 72, of 59 Carnelian Drive, who died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, was the son of the late Walter A. Schwartz Sr. and Jessie Martina Wagner Schwartz.

He worked as a machinist for T.B. Woods, retiring in 1991.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Schwartz.




Fred O. Plessinger

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Fred O. Plessinger, 61, of 2116 Mountain Road, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at his home.

Born Friday, Jan. 2, 1942, in Needmore, Pa., he was the son of the late Marvin and Esther Wagner Plessinger.

He was a laborer.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Warfordsburg.

He is survived by four sisters, Marian Wertz and Erma M. Gordon, both of Warfordsburg, Mary Wilson of Gettysburg, Pa., and Barbara Hopkins of McConnellsburg, Pa.; and four brothers, Frank Plessinger of McConnellsburg, Russ Plessinger and George Plessinger, both of Warfordsburg, and Howard Plessinger of Philipsburg, Pa.

He was preceded in death by a half-sister, Martha Frazier.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m.. at Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Warfordsburg. The Rev. Denver Plessinger will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Christian Cemetery, Warfordsburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sipes Funeral home, Harrisonville, Pa., which will open at 2 p.m. Visitation also will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the church.

Arvella W. Church

BOONSBORO - Arvella "Polly" Walker Church, 86, of 8507 Mapleville Road, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at Fahrney-Keedy Home near Boonsboro.

Born Sept. 24, 1916, in Shady Valley, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Rebecca Cordelia Garland Walker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jefferson Church.

She was formerly employed as a nurse's aide and laundry supervisor at Fahrney-Keedy Home.

She was a member of Fahrney-Keedy Fellowship.

She is survived by a son, Earl C. Church of Fairplay; a sister, Emmalee Blevins of Boonsboro; two grandchildren, Donna L. Moats of Williamsport and Gregory A. Church of Fairplay; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a half-sister, Sarah Barlow.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fahrney-Keedy Home. The Rev. Louis R. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro and Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Fahrney-Keedy Home.

David B. Merritt

David Berryman Merritt, 47, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 23, 1955, in Modesto, Calif., he was the son of Eleanor Leach Merritt of Hagerstown and the late John Berryman Merritt.

He was a graduate of the University of Santa Clara, Santa Clara, Calif.

He was a consultant to a number of major national corporations.

In addition to his mother, his is survived by his wife, Maria Merritt; a daughter, Anne M. Merritt at home; a son, David C. Merritt at home; a sister, Susan Lee of Burke, Va.; two brothers, John Merritt and Edmond Merritt, both of Sanoma, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.
