WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A morning fire Tuesday caused heavy damage to a second-floor apartment at 156 E. Second St. and slightly injured two Waynesboro firefighters, a Waynesboro Fire Department official said.

The apartment is occupied by Cathy Brown. She had left for work before the blaze was discovered, said Waynesboro Fire Chief Dale Fishack.

A neighbor saw the smoke in the building, which is owned by Esther Orlando, he said.

Both firefighters were treated at Waynesboro Hospital and released, according to a hospital spokesperson. Jerry Hartman was treated for minor burns on his neck and ears and Adam Matthews was treated for smoke inhalation after his breathing apparatus failed.

The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal. It was believed it started in a rear bedroom, Fishack said.

Brown's apartment sustained heavy fire and smoke damage and an apartment below had some water damage, the spokesman said.

The alarm came in at 7:43 a.m. Crews were on the scene until 12:09 p.m.

In addition to Waynesboro, responding units included Leitersburg, Mont Alto, Pa., Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., the Franklin Air Unit and a ladder truck from the city of Hagerstown.
