Hawks shot down by Mitchell, Conn.

The Hagerstown Community College Hawks fell a little bit short in their upset attempt of the Mitchell College Pequots, a perennial national power from Connecticut.

Mitchell squeezed by Hagerstown 85-82 on Saturday during the second game of the women's basketball mixer at the HCC athletic complex.

HCC coach Marlys Palmer was glad her team rose to the occasion against a quality Mitchell squad.

"This was the best effort that we have had against a good team," Palmer said. "We were really competitive against a talented team. We wanted to fight hard, be mentally tough and do it for 40 minutes. I thought that we did that. If we make our free throws, then we can win the ballgame."

The Hawks made 19 of 31 free throws. Mitchell made 20 of 32.

"I thought that it was a really good effort and it gives us something to build on," Palmer added. "This was the closest that we have come to beating them. So, we were real pleased."

Kristy Gaines finished with 23 points - making all nine of her free-throw attempts - and 10 rebounds for HCC. Autumn Parson scored 14 points and Ashley Mason had 10 rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for Mitchell. Aimee Kuhn led the way with 20 points, while Jade Leitao and Shanna Cyrus added 17 points each. April Stevenson had 12 points and Carmella Suggs had 10.

"I thought that it was a good, hard-fought win," Mitchell coach Cas Grygorcewicz said. "Hagerstown has got a fine team. They have good balance. They are probably one outstanding shooter away from being complete."

n Despite having only six players dressed, the Rockingham (N.C.) Eagles edged the Mercer County (N.J.) Vikings 72-71 in overtime in the first game.

Kim Perkins scored 30 points to lead Rockingham. Vicki Jenkins topped Mercer with 22 points.

Mitchell (11-1) will play Rockingham (3-7) at 1 p.m. today. Mercer (6-5) plays Hagerstown (6-4) at 3.
