Baltimore man killed in shooting

January 06, 2003|by MARLO BARNHART

The identity of a 23-year-old Baltimore man who died after being shot in the head Saturday night at an apartment complex was still being withheld Sunday, as no next of kin could be found, said Lt. Tom Chase of Frederick City Police.

"All known prior addresses in Frederick and Baltimore have been checked by detectives without success in locating a relative," Chase said Sunday afternoon.

The man was pronounced dead at 10:12 p.m. Saturday, less than an hour after he was shot about 9:30 p.m. outside Country Hill Apartments on Heather Ridge Drive, police said.

Although a description of the shooter was sketchy, witnesses told police the shooter left the area, possibly in a gold Pontiac Trans Am or a Grand Am, Chase said.

Two black men in dark clothing were seen leaving in the car, police said.

Chase said the victim was being flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore when the Maryland State Police medevac helicopter was diverted to Frederick Memorial Hospital after he went into cardiac arrest.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Chase said.

"A single projectile was recovered from the victim," Chase said. That, coupled with a shell casing found at the scene, led police to determine the weapon was a 9 mm handgun.

Chase said witnesses outside Building A-211 said the man was visiting his girlfriend in Frederick.

Anyone with any information on the shooting is asked to call 1-301-694-2126.
