Tractor-trailer wreck causes fuel spill

January 03, 2003

A tractor-trailer rear-ended another tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 Thursday morning, then went off the road, causing a diesel fuel leak, a firefighter said.

There was concern at first that the fuel would run into a waterway that feeds Conococheague Creek, according to a Washington County emergency dispatcher on duty when the call came in.

However, the 30 to 40 gallons of fuel that leaked from the tractor-trailer onto the ground was soaked up and removed before it got near the water, said Scott Wolff, a firefighter with the Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Dept.

The accident happened near Exit 24 on I-70 at about 9:30 a.m.

Wolff said crews from the Clear Spring and Williamsport fire departments and the Washington County Special Operations Team responded to the call.
