HAGERSTOWN - Calvettie Vashon Johnson Jr. became the first baby of 2003 in the Tri-State area.

The 7-pound, 3-ounce boy was born 55 minutes into the New Year at Washington County Hospital. He was 18.5 inches long.

His aunt, Sue Burker of Hagerstown, was calling him "Junior" on Wednesday afternoon.

Rose Burker of Hagerstown said she suspected her new grandson would be a New Year's baby when the due date of her daughter, Terri Burker, came and went. Six days later, her wish came true.

"First New Year's baby in the family," she said.

Calvettie is Burker's third child. The Hagerstown woman gave birth to Tyreese in 2000 and Dontay in 2001.

The little boy was sleeping quietly Wednesday afternoon. Burker, 23, had tried to feed him several times, but he wasn't interested.

"He's too exhausted to eat," she said. "I don't know why. I did all the work."

The baby's father was visiting relatives out of the state and planned to return Friday, she said.

Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital saw its first baby of the New Year at 7:53 a.m., said registered nurse Sheila Colvin.

The little boy weighed in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces and was a little over 21 inches long. His mother did not want to have any other information released to the public, Colvin said.

A few hours later, Jesus and Fidela Garcia of Martinsburg, W.Va., welcomed their daughter, Maria, into the world, said Cathy Simpson, a registered nurse at City Hospital.

Maria Garcia was born at 11:49 a.m., weighing 7 pounds, 1/2 ounce. She's the couple's fifth child, Simpson said.

Alexander Joseph Perez was born at 6:23 p.m. Wednesday at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital to Susan and Michael Perez of Frederick. He weighed 8 pounds, 151/2 ounces.
