SMITHSBURG - Senior Katy Powell had 28 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and five assists to lead the Smithsburg Leopards to a 47-31 win over the Grace Academy Knights on Thursday night during the first day of the fourth annual Pap Draper Classic at Smithsburg.

The Urbana Hawks defeated the St. Maria Goretti Gaels 60-50 in the other first-round game.

Grace (3-4) will face Goretti (7-4) in the consolation game tonight at 6, while Urbana (3-2) will square off against Smithsburg (4-0) in the championship game at 8. The Leopards upset the Hawks in last year's final.

Powell's 28 points put her at 1,297 for her career, as she moved into second place on Smithsburg's career scoring list ahead of Carey Brennan's 1,284. Powell trails only Julie Salmon's 1,486 points, set in 1982.

"Carey Brennan is a great player," Powell said. "We have had a great number of players here throughout the years. It is an honor to be mentioned among their names."

Powell scored 17 of her points in the second half as the Leopards pulled away from the Knights.

"It is hard to get a team out of rhythm when they have a good, smart player like Katy Powell leading the way," Grace Academy coach John Basore said. "Smithsburg went on four spurts at the beginning of each quarter. That is what beat us. We couldn't catch up. We couldn't take care of the basketball and that was the key."

Leopards' junior center Tara Knable had 13 rebounds.

Lauren Durbin had 18 points and 14 rebounds, while Susanna Hill had 10 rebounds for Grace Academy.

"I thought we played pretty sluggish in the first half," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said. "I thought that Grace Academy played good defense against us. We did a better job in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter. We got more people involved scoring in the second half. We weren't one-dimensional, where we just depended on Katy. Katy found her shot in the fourth quarter."

Urbana won its game behind Jessica Mills' team-high totals of 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Katie Armentrout and freshman Catherine Mills scored 12 points each, while Kathleen Vistica made five steals for the Hawks. Reserve center Nia Josiah, a 6-foot freshman transfer from Bullis Prep in Washington, grabbed seven rebounds.

Katie Chambers, Kelly Wills and freshman reserve Heidi Mothershead scored 11 points apiece to lead Goretti.

"We made 31 turnovers and that is where we lost it at," St. Maria Goretti coach Todd Rideout said.

"We did a terrible job handling their press. We acted like it was the first time that we went against a press. They got hot in the fourth quarter and we just didn't have an answer for it."
