Man, 21, dies in car accident

December 23, 2002

HAGERSTOWN - A 21-year-old Hagerstown-area man was killed early Saturday morning after his truck crossed the center line and hit a car head-on.

Wilbur Elwood Martin II of Church Hill Court was westbound on U.S. 40 at 1:37 a.m. when the crash occurred, Maryland State Police said.

Martin failed to negotiate a curve and his 1998 Ford Ranger went into the oncoming lane and collided with a 1997 Ford Taurus driven by Kristi Jo DeMartino, 18, of Waynesboro, Pa., police said.

Martin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck and killed, police said.

DeMartino and two children in her car escaped serious injury, police said. All three were wearing seat belts.

They were taken to Washington County Hospital, where a hospital spokeswoman said DeMartino was treated and released. Further information about the juveniles was unavailable.
