Leonard E. Avis

Leonard Erik Avis, 76, of Avalon Manor, Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, and formerly of McConnellsburg, Pa., died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Avalon Manor.

He was born June 16, 1926, in the Netherlands.

He was a chemical engineer for the space shuttle program of the U.S. government.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

A graveside service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Orbisonia Cemetery, Orbisonia, Pa. The Rev. David Ford will officiate.

Arrangements are by M. R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, Pa.




Amanda E. Presley

Amanda Ethel Presley, 89, of Stonecroft Court, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 28, 1913, in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ira and Rose Etta OQuinn James.

Her husband, Sampson Presley, died in 1978.

She was a homemaker.

She attended Duty View Primitive Baptist Church in Haysi, Va.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Beulah Ann Bonham of Gordonsville, Va.; one son, Harold W. Presley of Hagerstown; two sisters, E. Garnet Price of Hagerstown and Arbutus Langley of Hawthorne, Fla.; one brother, Edward T. James of Gainesville, Fla.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by one son, Gary D. Presley; and four brothers, Claude James, Jesse James, Leonard James and Garland James.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Duty View Primitive Baptist Church in Haysi. Elders Garnell Gilbert, Bill Stevens and Leonard Barton will officiate. Burial will be in OQuinn Cemetery in Bee, Va.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home in Williamsport, which will be open after 3 p.m. for the convenience of friends. The family also will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Haysi Funeral Home in Haysi.




Helen A. Remsburg

JEFFERSON, Md. - Helen Adele Remsburg, 85, of 3929 Fry Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at her home.

Born May 14, 1917, in Jefferson, she was the daughter of the late Lee Roy and Mary Roderick Remsburg.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Jefferson.

She was an administrator for Mehrl Wachter Plumbing in Frederick, Md.; and was employed by Litton Bionetics in Frederick.

She was active in Republican politics.

She is survived by one nephew, Richard E. Remsburg of Jefferson; one great-nephew, Chad E. Remsburg of Jefferson; and her caregivers, Charles and Viola Whieldon of Jefferson.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard R. Remsburg.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Jefferson. The Rev. Virginia K. Price will officiate.

Burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 3864 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755.

Mary Ruth Harper

BRUNSWICK, Md. - Mary Ruth Harper, 74, of 307 E. Potomac St., died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 3, 1928, in Nicholas County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Omar G. and Grace McCray Herron.

She retired as a waitress from Cindy-Dee Restaurant in Knoxville, Md.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by one daughter, Candi Dayton of Brunswick; three sons, Gary Herron of Beckley, W.Va., Charles Stack of Frederick and Timothy Stack of Brunswick; four sisters, Genevieve Hoke of Cleveland, W.Va., Rebecca Kelbaugh of Yarrowsburg, Md. and Patricia Blevins and Janice Blackford, both of Charles Town, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Townsend and Oleta May Herron; and three nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, Brunswick. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today and Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open Friday at 9 a.m.




Gerald T. Beecher

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Gerald T. Beecher, 74, of 27 Forest Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Dec. 27, 1927, in Hockersville, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel A. and Elizabeth Miller Beecher.

He owned and operated the Golden Lantern General Store in Scotland, Pa.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Chambersburg.

He was a member of Fayetteville Volunteer Fire Co. and had been a member of Greene Township Lions Club. He had served on the board of Pregnancy Ministries of Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, June M. Shepard Beecher, whom he married June 5, 1984; six sisters, Leona Beecher and Mary Frengel, both of Shippensburg, Pa., Margaret Widney and Nancy Sommerville, both of Chambersburg, Joan Ashburn of Carlisle, Pa. and Becky Gallucci of Cape Neddick, Maine; and one brother, Richard Beecher of Carlisle.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church in Chambersburg. The Rev. Robert O. Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
